74 Research Papers Put Responsible AI at the Centre of Higher Education Debate in Mumbai

Artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming part of classrooms, academic research and institutional decision-making, but its expansion is also raising questions about ethics, faculty readiness, inclusion and sustainability.

These issues were at the centre of an international conference hosted by Vivekanand Education Society’s College of Arts, Science & Commerce (VESASC) in Mumbai. The institution organised the International Conference on Transforming Higher Education through AI and Technology for Sustainable Development in collaboration with Rajapark Institute, Bangkok, Thailand.

Held under the PM USHA initiative, the conference brought together academicians, researchers, industry professionals, policymakers and students from India and abroad to examine how artificial intelligence can be incorporated into higher education while maintaining academic and social responsibility.

The scale of participation highlighted the growing academic interest in AI. Seventy-four research papers were presented across four parallel tracks, with 52 presented offline and 22 online. Participants represented 32 institutions, including institutions from Thailand and seven Indian states. 

The discussions went beyond the technological capabilities of AI. A central question was how universities can adopt new technologies without compromising human judgment, academic integrity, inclusion and sustainable development.

Faculty Preparedness Becomes Critical

One of the most important challenges emerging from the rapid adoption of AI is whether teachers and academic institutions are sufficiently prepared to use the technology effectively.

AI tools can assist with research, lesson planning, assessment, data analysis and personalised learning. However, simply providing access to these tools does not guarantee better education.

Faculty members need to understand how AI systems work, how to evaluate their outputs and where human oversight remains essential. Incorrect information, algorithmic bias, privacy concerns and excessive dependence on automated systems can create new risks if educators are not adequately trained.

The conference therefore placed emphasis on faculty preparedness alongside technological adoption.

This approach reflects a broader change in how AI is being viewed within education. Instead of treating AI as a replacement for conventional teaching, institutions are increasingly examining how technology can support educators while preserving the human elements of learning.

The conference also highlighted the importance of creating an academic environment in which students develop the ability to critically evaluate AI-generated information rather than simply accepting machine-produced answers.

Ethics, Inclusion and Sustainability Take Centre Stage

The discussions also focused on the need for AI adoption to remain ethical and inclusive.

Principal Dr. Anita Kanwar emphasised the importance of ensuring that AI development in higher education remains ethical, inclusive and sustainable. The emphasis is particularly relevant as universities increasingly use technology for academic decision-making and student support.  

AI can potentially improve access to education by supporting personalised learning and providing students with additional academic assistance. At the same time, unequal access to technology could deepen existing educational disparities.

Data privacy is another major consideration. Universities handle sensitive information about students, faculty and research activities. Greater use of AI systems therefore creates a need for clear policies governing how data is collected, stored and used.

Academic integrity is similarly becoming more complicated. Generative AI can assist students with writing and research, but institutions must distinguish between legitimate use of technology and work that undermines independent learning and assessment.

These challenges mean that responsible AI requires institutional policies, faculty training and student awareness rather than simply introducing new software.

Indian Education Priorities Also Featured in Discussions

The conference connected AI adoption with India’s broader education priorities, including NEP 2020 and Indian Knowledge Systems.

This is significant because technological transformation in Indian higher education is taking place alongside efforts to create a more multidisciplinary, flexible and locally relevant education system.

The discussions explored how emerging technologies could support these objectives while ensuring that digital transformation does not displace cultural, ethical and human dimensions of education.

International participation added another layer to the discussions. Dr. Thanapon Sarunburana, Vice Chancellor of Rajapark Institute in Thailand, shared a special message, while Dr. Arun Chainit, Head of the Department of Public Administration at Phranakhon Rajabhat University in Thailand, delivered the keynote address. 

The participation of institutions from India and Thailand also demonstrated the growing importance of international academic collaboration around AI and education.

Universities Move Toward a More Responsible AI Framework

The conference reflects a wider shift in higher education: the debate is moving from whether universities should use AI to how they should use it responsibly.

AI is likely to become increasingly embedded in teaching, research, administration and student services. Universities that successfully integrate the technology will need to combine innovation with strong governance.

That means preparing faculty, establishing clear rules for responsible AI use, protecting student data, addressing bias and ensuring that technology improves rather than weakens educational outcomes.

VESASC’s conference provided a platform for researchers and educators to examine these questions through academic research and international collaboration. With 74 papers presented and participation from 32 institutions, the event also demonstrated the breadth of interest in understanding AI’s long-term impact on higher education.  

The central message emerging from the discussions is that AI should not be viewed simply as another classroom technology. Its impact reaches teaching, research, institutional governance and the future skills students need.

For higher education institutions, the next challenge will be creating systems where innovation and responsibility develop together—ensuring that AI becomes a tool for more effective, inclusive and sustainable education without losing the human values at the heart of learning.
